Google has announced that backups created with WhatsApp on Android devices will now be included in the user's Google Account cloud storage quota. The update will be accessible to WhatsApp Beta users in December 2023 and to all Android users in early 2024.
Due to a joint announcement by Google and WhatsApp, Android smartphone users are likely to forfeit a notable advantage of WhatsApp.
The change entails that customers' cloud storage utilization for Google accounts will now encompass backups of media files and WhatsApp conversations on Android devices.
The users' existing Google Drive storage remained unaffected by these backups. However, the circumstances have changed due to the latest revisions in business policy.
Individuals currently utilizing Google's default storage allocation of 15 GB should now be attentive to their storage consumption.
In its Help Center announcement, WhatsApp indicated that users must free up storage space to accommodate new data before restarting backups if they have exceeded the allocated storage limit.
If you are concerned that WhatsApp and Google might unexpectedly halt your backups, rest assured that this will not occur.
WhatsApp announces that it will notify users 30 days prior to discontinuing free Google Drive conversation backups, providing sufficient time to implement any necessary changes.
